Chapter Thirteen

Author:

The week went by surprisingly quickly, and by the end of it, we still didn’t have a spell ready. However, Caleb had started to stay at the house with us, building a small friendship with Marco, but still very leery of him. He didn’t understand what we were doing, but he watched us, interested. I could tell this gave Marco a sense of security. Caleb wouldn’t be thrown off when it was time to cast the spell. It also helped prove that Marco was doing nothing out of malice.

It was the day we were due to leave. After we were done with our practice, Marco sighed, pacing. “It’s really not right for me to go with you. This is a family trip. I’m not family.”

I walked up to him. “But we need you, Marco.”

“Yeah, I get that.” He sighed again. “But I’d be so out of place.”

I shook my head. “There’s plenty of things to do when we aren’t working on the spell. And everyone is okay with you coming, including Ambrosia and Caleb.”

He sighed again. “Fine. I’ll be back when it’s time to go.”

I took his hands. “No, you’re not leaving in a huff like that.”

He smiled slightly. “I’m fine. I just don’t want to intrude.”

“You’re not, okay?” I hugged him. “Calm down. It’ll be fine.”

He nodded. “Alright, but I still need to go. I have clothes to pack.”

I smiled and let him go. “Fair. See you in a few hours.”

He smiled back and teleported away.

I went to my room to finish packing my suitcase for the trip. We were due to catch the train in three hours. I wanted to make sure I was completely ready.

Morgyn walked in, resting his arm on the door frame as he gazed at me. “Did you pack the most important thing?”

I looked up at him with a big smile. “Of course I did!” I held up the envelope with the court papers in it. They were copies of the originals, so Jewel could keep them, frame them, or put them in a scrapbook.

He smiled as well. “I guess Ambrosia planned this big bash that coincides with the festival of snow on the mountain. She invited Jewel’s friends to join us as well. I think she’s more excited for it than Jewel will be about it.”

I continued smiling, also excited. “Big sis is helping to show more love to her than she’s had her whole life.”

He gazed up at the ceiling, tracing the paint patterns with his eyes. “Yeah. I only hope Jewel loves it just as much.”

I walked over to him and wrapped my arms around his waist. “She will.”

He kissed my forehead. “This is exciting.”

I smiled happily. “Yes, it is. I haven’t taken a vacation in a long time. The events that are about to happen just make it even more exciting.”

He helped me pack up the rest of my stuff and brought my suitcase downstairs, by the door. I stood at the window, looking out over the city as the sun danced across the windows of the buildings. We had a long train ride ahead of us. I sighed and turned toward the kitchen, packing a large bag of snacks and treats for us in case we got hungry.

“You know they’ll have meals on the train, right?” Ambrosia giggled, walking up behind me.

I laughed quietly. “It’s just precautionary.”

“Fair enough. I’m always up for a snack.” Ambrosia reached around me exaggeratedly and stole a small pack of cookies. She tore it open and popped one in her mouth.

I grinned as I continued packing the snacks.

“Are you okay?” Ambrosia asked, gazing at me. “You’re quiet.”

I nodded and glanced around. “I’m excited. Thinking about how this weekend will go. I just keep playing these scenarios in my head.”

Ambrosia smiled happily. “She’s going to love it.”

“Are we ready?” Lilith came in excitedly.

I tied up the bag of snacks and turned toward her. “So ready.”

“Have you seen my brother?” She asked.

“No,” I admitted. “I’ll go find him.” I brought the bag over to the suitcases and set it down, then headed out to the terrace. Since coming back to my house, Caleb spent a lot of time out there, just enjoying the sights and smells of the city.

Sure enough, he was there, standing by the balcony and gazing out across the river.

“Are you ready?” I asked quietly.

He turned slightly to look at me, holding out his arm. I walked over to him, and he put it around me.

“I’m ready,” he nodded. “But you see the docks?”

I nodded, gazing at them.

“I remembered something.” He smiled and closed his eyes.

I already knew what he was remembering. “Our dance.”

“Yes,” he smiled again.

I smiled as well, remembering us being so carefree and happy, dancing on the docks until we were caught off guard by a fan. I giggled softly.

Caleb turned toward me, taking my hand and pulling me closer into the position we were in to dance with me. I followed his movements and gazed into his eyes as we danced. He smiled, tightening his grip around my waist. Even though he smiled, his eyes were sad. I knew it was because he still didn’t feel like himself. He let go of my hand and pulled me into a hug after only a few moments. “Alright, we can go.”

We walked back into the house just as Marco came in, ready to go as well. We all gathered our things and headed to the train station.

As we all boarded the train, Ambrosia made a quiet shrieking sound, putting her hands up by her face.

“This is so exciting!” She exclaimed.

I nodded happily. “Yes, it is. I haven’t traveled in a long time, and I’m so glad I’m doing so now.” I gestured toward everyone. “With all of my favorite people.”

Ambrosia hugged me. “Mom. I’m so happy you feel that way.”

I hugged her back, tightly. “I’m thankful you are doing this.” I grinned at her as we pulled away. “But you know now I owe you, and I won’t take no for an answer.”

She sat back down and shrugged. “We’ll see about that.”

Jewel smiled, also excited. She was seated next to Ambrosia and Wolf, across from us, while Kris and Lilith sat across the aisle. Marco sat behind them with a pillow. I grinned. He was going to use this trip as a nap? Lame. He would miss the scenery.

Jewel had been doodling in her notebook, but paused to chat with us. “I agree with Jade, or Mom,” she glanced at me quickly, as if she was nervous to say that. “It was really nice of you to do this. I’m really excited.”

Ambrosia hugged her. “Anything for my little sis on her birthday!”

I smiled. It really was nice to see the two of them so close.

The ride was long, but beautiful. I found myself just gazing out the window a lot, watching corn fields, country cottages, impatient city drivers and various animals pass by. The sun began to set, and I watched as the sky turned a beautiful hue of orange, almost like a painting.

“We still have a few hours,” Ambrosia said quietly. Jewel had fallen asleep, resting on her shoulder. Everyone else was awake. Of course, the vampires required far less sleep, if any. So it wasn’t a surprise.

I nodded. “Yes.”

“Are you alright?” She asked.

I smiled and nodded slightly. “Yeah, just taking in the scenery. It’s so pretty out there.”

She smiled and gazed out the window as well. “Yes. It’s wonderful. I could have booked a flight, but I thought a train would be a nice bonding experience. The scenery is just an added bonus.” She winked.

“I see not many others were up for such a long trip.” I gestured toward the rest of the car, where there were very little people. Just a few scattered about.

She nodded. “Well it is a long trip from San Myshuno to Mt. Komorebi. We’re just ambitious.”

I giggled. “Yes. Ambitious.”

She gestured toward my belly. “How are you otherwise?”

I smiled, placing my hand on my belly. “Great. I made sure I was cleared to travel. And I’ve been obsessively checking in the mirror to see if I’ve got a bump.”

Caleb placed his hand on mine. “Maybe a small one.”

I giggled as he kissed my forehead. “I’m not looking forward to the real big prego belly, but I am looking forward to having a noticeable bump.”

“Still sleepy?” Ambrosia asked.

“Yes. Always.” I laughed. “But I’ve just learned to deal with it. I’ve been so busy with this spell that I have no choice but to tough it out.”

Ambrosia laughed softly and we all went quiet again. Lilith and Kris were pretty much keeping to themselves, just watching movies on Lilith’s laptop. Marco was gazing out his window.

“Excuse me,” I smiled as I got up and walked over to him. I sat beside him. “Hey.”

He smiled warmly. “Hey. Why aren’t you with the others?”

“You looked lonely.” I shrugged.

He waved his hand. “Nah. I’m enjoying the view.” He glanced over at the others, chatting amongst themselves. “And I didn’t want to intrude.”

I gazed at him. “You’re in our circle now. Don’t be afraid to join conversations. Everyone has given you a chance, and you haven’t let them down.”

He shrugged. “I feel guilty.”

“Don’t.”

“Jade-”

“No, Marco, seriously. Don’t. It’s in the past. We’ve all let it go. Even those of us you did the worst to; Caleb and Lilith. Please, let us let you in.”

He smiled. “Yeah, alright. I’ll give it a shot.”

“Good,” I smiled back and stood up. “Enjoy the view.” I headed back to my seat and continued watching the sunset as my eyes got heavy. I closed them, leaning against Caleb as Morgyn read a book. Caleb stroked my hair softly, and I fell asleep quickly.

I woke up to another kiss on my forehead. I opened my eyes and gazed up at Caleb.

“We’re here,” he said with a smile.

I also smiled and sat up. I gazed out the window and saw nothing but snow.

“Might want to bundle up!” Ambrosia giggled as she stood up. “It’s cold out there.”

I nodded, grabbing my gloves, coat and hat. I put them on and we all exited the train. We were immediately escorted to the lodge Ambrosia had booked. It was a large mansion right by all of the activities; skiing, snowboarding, sledding, as well as the court where you could get food and use vending machines.

“Wow,” I whispered, looking around. “It’s amazing.”

Ambrosia grinned. “It really is. Look at the slopes. There’s some seriously talented people here. I can’t wait to get up there and try some moves of my own.” She looked at me. “Would you ever try?”

“I don’t ski,” I said, shaking my head quickly. Even if I wasn’t pregnant, those slopes would have been a place I’d stay far away from.

We walked into the house. It was huge. It didn’t fully match the look of the other rentals, but it did have similarities. There was a large chandelier that hung over the living room area, and cast light in the upstairs hallway, which was open and looked down at the living space.

“There are five bedrooms,” Ambrosia said, setting her suitcase down.

“That’s perfect for all of us,” I smiled.

Ambrosia also smiled. “Yes.” She gestured toward the stairs. “Downstairs is a theater and a little party area. Upstairs has the bedrooms, besides the one over here,” she gestured toward the one bedroom on the main floor. “We should probably claim our rooms now so there’s no confusion later.”

“Can I take the one down here?” Jewel asked, happily.

“Sure!” Ambrosia smiled. “I was hoping you would. It’s one of the biggest bedrooms. There are two large bedrooms and two smaller ones.”

“Morgyn, Caleb and I can take a small room,” I said. “I think we’ll be much too busy to use it for anything other than sleeping anyhow.”

Caleb nodded. “Maybe you and Wolf should take the other large room. After all, you were the one that booked this place. It’s only fair that you would have a larger room.”

Ambrosia smiled. “Thanks Dad. If everyone is alright with that, then I think it’s settled!”

Lilith also smiled. “Yeah, Kris and I won’t need anything fancy either.”

Marco nodded. “I’d even take the couch. I’m not picky.”

We all went into our rooms and placed our stuff down. Morgyn walked back out to grab something to eat, as he didn’t eat much of his dinner on the train. Caleb and I were left alone.

He wrapped his arms around my waist. I giggled softly and turned to face him, wrapping my arms around him. “Hey you.”

He spoke quietly. “You’re uneasy.”

I stroked his hair softly. “There are reasons for that.” I paused. “But I will explain those at another time. For now,” I leaned in closer. “Let’s just enjoy ourselves, hmm?” I kissed him softly.

He didn’t pull away, wanting another kiss. I smiled and kissed him again. “Maybe we should try to keep our hands off of each other.”

He grinned. “Nonsense! It’s a vacation.”

I giggled as he swayed me back and forth, but didn’t say a word. So far, nothing had made him edgy.

At least not yet.

He nudged my head with his. I gazed at him, and he gave me a smile. “Well, I’ll be here for you when everyone goes out onto the mountain.”

I shook my head. “No, Caleb. You’re here to have fun as well.”

“And so are you,” he noted. “And being alone is no fun. I don’t mind keeping you company. I could always go when everyone else is here, or something like that.” He shrugged slightly.

I smiled. “That’s nice of you, Caleb. Thank you.”

He held me close. “Anything for you.”

I closed my eyes, soaking in his words.

“Hey,” he whispered, causing me to look at him. As I did, he kissed me again. I smiled and leaned into him.

“We should go downstairs before the others think we’re up to something,” I giggled.

Caleb pulled me closer, playfully. “You mean we aren’t?” He kissed my neck, still in a playful way.

“Ah!” I shrieked through giggles. “Caleb! Nonononono!” I felt like a teenager all over again. Just being so playful made me happy.

“Alright, alright,” he agreed with a laugh. “I’ll just tease you more later.” He put his arm around me as we walked out of the room. We headed downstairs where everyone was getting things in order for a movie night. We sat down. Caleb and I sat together with Morgyn and Jewel beside us. Ambrosia and Wolf sat on the other sofa, Ambrosia on Wolf’s lap, with Lilith and Kris next to them. Marco sat beside them nervously.

I closed my eyes, resting my head on Caleb’s chest as I leaned against him. He stroked my hair. “Falling asleep?”

I shook my head. “No. Well, maybe.”

He laughed softly. “You can go upstairs if you want.”

“No, no. I want to be here with everyone.” I sat up a little.

He wrapped his arms around me as I leaned into him again. He pushed my hair aside and rested his chin on my shoulder, making me giggle a little. I heard him let out a small chuckle, his breath quickly rushing over my neck. I closed my eyes for a moment. Or at least I thought it was a moment. When I opened them, I was in the bed, comfortably under the covers. Caleb was beside me, reading a book. Sleepily, I gazed up at him. He gave me a slight smile, narrowing his eyes.

“Hello.”

“Hey.” My voice came out in a near-whisper. I cleared my throat. “Um, how long was I asleep for?”

He shrugged. “Doesn’t matter.” He put the book down. “How are you feeling now?”

I shook my head. “Confused.”

“Why?”

“I closed my eyes for a moment and I woke up here. I missed the rest of the movie. I feel like a party pooper.” I sighed.

He laughed. “To be fair, the movie was boring. They all decided to end it early to hit the slopes. So I carried you up here.” He continued to chat about the evening, things that had been said, funny moments. I sat up on the bed, leaning into him, just listening to his voice. I felt a sudden weird sensation in my belly.

“Whoa.” I looked down and put my hand on my belly. “Sorry, didn’t mean to cut you off. That was strange.” I waited in silence for another feeling like that one. When I felt it, I smiled. “I think I’m feeling the baby for the first time.”

Caleb excitedly put his hand on belly.

“It’s really light,” I said quietly. “Everyone was right when they said you barely feel it at first.” I giggled. I looked up at Caleb, and he kissed me softly.

After a little while, I fell asleep again, sleeping until the morning. Caleb stayed with me the whole time, patiently.

As we got downstairs, Ambrosia pulled me into a tight hug. “Morning, Mama. Today is the big day.” She smiled. Her voice was calm, but I could see her eyes sparkle with excitement. “Are you guys ready?”

Right on cue, Jewel came out of her room. She was groggy and her hair was a mess.

“Please tell me you made coffee,” she said quietly.

Ambrosia nodded. “Just for you, little sis.”

“Happy Birthday,” I smiled, hugging her.

“Thanks.” I could tell she was smiling back, albeit groggily. As we pulled away, she gave me a bright smile. “I’m excited I’m actually going to have a good birthday.

I nodded. “I’m sure you’re going to love it.”

“I already do.” She gave me another smile and walked off to the kitchen.

Ambrosia motioned for us to follow her. She started walking up the stairs and Morgyn, Caleb and I followed.

“Her friends are coming in a couple of hours. Since they’re on break for school for the next week, I offered to have them stay with us for at least a few days as well. Their parents agreed.” Morgyn kept his voice quiet.

I gestured toward my room. “I have an envelope with the papers in my suitcase. I’ll head into town in a bit to buy party supplies.”

Ambrosia smiled wide. “Great!” She hopped. “God, I’m so excited! I’ve always wanted a sister I can spoil, and you totally enabled me.”

I laughed. “You’re welcome, I guess?”

She hugged me again. “I hope you allow me to spoil my tiny sibling as well.”

I nodded. “Well of course! Need to share the spoil with everyone.”

She giggled. “You’ve got it!”

“So what’s the plan for the party? Does she know there’s going to be one?” I asked quietly.

“She knows something is happening, but I think she assumes we’re just going to enjoy the festivities. She doesn’t know there’s a real birthday party with friends happening.” Morgyn glanced toward the stairs to make sure Jewel wasn’t coming.

I grinned. “Ambrosia may be the mastermind behind this, but I’m going to go all out when I go shopping.”

“Oh, don’t let me stop you!” Ambrosia laughed. “I’ll go with you too!”

We went back downstairs before heading out. Caleb offered to come along with us.

He came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. As he did, I felt more movement in my belly.

I giggled softly. “You woke the peanut, I think.” I held up my right hand, where Ruby’s ring sat on my ring finger. I turned around to face him, placing my hand on his cheek. I gazed into his eyes.

“I’m so sorry for the way I’ve been.”

“Shhh,” I shook my head. “This isn’t your fault. And look at you. You’re doing a great job controlling it.”

Marco walked up to us. “While you are celebrating Jewel’s birthday, I’ll be downstairs practicing. I don’t know her well, and I can be more useful elsewhere.” He put his hand on Caleb’s shoulder. “This will get resolved. That’s a promise. I will get this right or die trying.”

Caleb smiled. “Thank you, Marco.”

“You’re still welcome to have pizza, cake, ice cream, you name it.” I smiled.

Marco laughed quietly. “Maybe after everything has settled.”

“Ready?” We heard Ambrosia call us.

“Coming!” I called, taking Caleb’s hand.

Shopping with Ambrosia was quite the task. She was a shopaholic, practically running between each aisle excitedly, as if she had never been in such a store before. It was actually quite exhausting. But, it was also amusing and entertaining. By the end of the trip, we had party food, streamers, balloons, a cake order, flowers, gift bags and boxes, bows and ribbons. What we didn’t have was all of the brain cells we left with.

Once out of the department store, Ambrosia sighed happily. “Ah, wasn’t that fun?”

Caleb sighed, and I giggled. “Yes.”

“I’ll have to take you guys out more often!” She patted Caleb on the back and started to walk away. I followed, smirking at Caleb, who was very clearly done with both of us.

I called Morgyn as we approached the lodge so he could take Jewel out so we could set up. We got everything ready in record time, complete with our delivered cake order and pizza. Jewel’s friends arrived together with their parents.

“This is extravagant!” One of the mothers mused. “I always thought Jewel’s parents were…I’m sorry, I shouldn’t. I don’t want to offend. But I just never expected this for her.” She smiled at us and held out her hand. “I’m Jenny! And I‘m so sorry I thought poorly of you.”

“I second that,” another mother chimed in, stepping forward.

I smiled and laughed nervously. “Everyone, please, come in. I need to explain.”

We all sat in the living room. I took a deep breath. “So, Jewel came to Morgyn and I in the magic realm, an-“

“Morgyn?” Jenny interrupted. “As in Morgyn Ember, the famous sage?”

I nodded. “Yes, that’s correct.” I explained everything surrounding our meeting and what was going on in her home life. “She said she wanted us to formally adopt her. Finally, her parents agreed, but she doesn’t know that yet.” I smiled. “That’s what this party is about. It’s not just for her birthday, but it’s to celebrate her becoming part of our family.”

“But where is Morgyn now?” Jenny asked, almost starstruck.

I started getting annoyed. “He took Jewel out because this is a surprise party.”

Jenny continued gazing at me, but didn’t say anything.

“I…” I sighed. “I think he would be coming back any time now, if you’d like to meet him.”

Jenny’s eyes lit up. “Oh, I can’t wait!”

Rosie, her daughter, who had stayed quiet through this interaction finally spoke up. “Mom, please.”

The other teens and parents laughed. One of them looked at me.

“I think what you two did for her is amazing. She’s a sweet girl and deserves more love than her parents gave her.” She stood up.

I stood up with her and she hugged me. “It broke my heart to see that.”

We said our goodbyes, and the parents left, except for Jenny. I didn’t really know how to react with her around, but Ambrosia quickly distracted her by asking her to help put up some streamers. I organized plates and cups for the celebration. Then I quickly retreated to my room for the most important gift. I had brought up the gift box I picked out; a white box with gold glitter stripes all around it. Elegant but attention grabbing. Perfect for its contents. I pulled out the folder with the documents and placed them neatly in the box, between two layers of tissue paper. Closing the box again, I wrapped it with a gold ribbon and tied it. I brought it back downstairs and placed it on the table, placing a card on top of it that was from Morgyn and I. I smiled at it. The more everything came together, the more excited I got.

The door opened and Morgyn and Jewel stood on the other side.

“Wow!” Morgyn exclaimed, awestruck by the sight that greeted him.

Jewel stopped in place, a look of shock on her face. “This….” she stopped. “This is all for me?”

I walked toward her, hugging her. “Yes, my sweet girl. It’s all for you.”

Morgyn walked away, smiling happily at us.

Jenny ran over and hugged him. “Oh, Morgyn! You’re a saint!”

“I-!” He stepped backwards, catching his balance from the sudden movements. “Thank you, that’s nice of you to say. Do we know each other?”

I giggled softly.

“J-Jade,” Jewel said quietly. “This is more than I had even hoped for.”

I smiled. “I know. But you deserve it. And I mean, maybe I would have gone a little easier on the decor, Ambrosia couldn’t wait to spoil you either.”

She giggled. “You’re the best. Thank you.”

I smiled warmly. “We wanted to make this the perfect day for you.”

She nodded and looked up. “Rosie! Alexis!” She ran toward them and hugged them. “Thank you for coming!”

I smiled and walked into the kitchen to meet up with Caleb and Ambrosia. I grinned at Caleb.

“How are you holding up?”

“Better than the shopping spree,” he gave a playful glare to Ambrosia.

Ambrosia scoffed jokingly. “Oh, come on, you loved it.”

I giggled.

Morgyn came in. “There are some people who should really steer clear of caffeine.” He shook his head.

“Jenny?” I stifled a laugh.

“Yeah, she was like a fan girl.” He shook his head again. “Just, whoa.”

I watched as Jenny happily strutted out the door to catch the next train home. “She was smitten.”

Caleb laughed. Ambrosia walked over to Morgyn and pinched his cheek playfully. “Oh, now, who wouldn’t be smitten by this handsome devil right here?” She spoke in a mock baby voice.

Morgyn stepped away. “Alright, alright. Enough picking on the Morgyn?”

Jewel came in with a piece of pizza. Without a word, she hugged me, then Morgyn. She smiled at Ambrosia and hugged her after.

“I really can’t thank you all enough.” She beamed. It was the happiest I had ever seen her. “This is amazing, and I will never forget it.”

“Well, the night is still young!” Ambrosia smiled. “There’s plenty of time to thank us. Tonight is about you. Celebrate with your friends, eat, chat, whatever, then we’ll do cake and presents and attend the festival.”

Jewel hugged her again. “I love you.”

“Awww.” Ambrosia’s eyes lit up. “I love you too, little sis.”

The first part of the party went quickly. We brought out the cake, sang “Happy Birthday” and allowed her to blow out her candles. As everyone grabbed a slice of cake, Jewel sat down at the table that was piled high with presents.

“I can’t believe this.” She spoke quietly, looking over all of the gifts in awe. “I don’t know what to do with all this.”

“Open them.” I smiled while stating the obvious. She gave me a smile as I gestured for her to open them. My heart fluttered a little as I anticipated what was coming.

She began to open the presents, starting with gift bags from her friends. She got many gift cards for shopping centers and coffee shops as well as makeup she was thrilled to see.

“You found it?” She asked Alexis. “I thought-“

“It had to be imported?” Alexis grinned. “You’re right, but I found ways.”

I smiled and tilted my head, watching this all unfold.

“Best present ever!” She squealed, holding the makeup close to her chest. “Thank you so much!” She held onto it as she grabbed the second to last present. The last one was from Morgyn and I. The one Jewel was opening was from Ambrosia. Jewel opened the wrapping paper in silence. As she opened the top, she smiled brightly. She pulled out paint pens, small canvasses and a large organizer for art supplies.

“I know how much you like to draw and paint and all that.” Ambrosia stepped toward her. “And any time you’re running low, call me. I’ll have new pens and canvasses ready for you before you can blink.”

Jewel hugged her. “Thank you so much!” She placed them down beside her, placing her makeup palette on top of them. Her eyes fell on the last box. She picked it up and opened the card. Inside was some money that she was happy to have, and she flashed Morgyn and I a smile before turning her attention to the box again. She pulled open the ribbon and opened the top of the box. And then she froze. She gazed into the box without a sound or movement.

Morgyn put his arm around me, and I cuddled close to him.

“Is this…” Jewel started, her voice breaking. She cleared her throat. “Is this real?”

“Yes,” Morgyn and I said together.

She didn’t say another word. She jumped up and hugged us as tightly as she could. Rosie and Alexis scrambled toward the box to see what was inside, and they smiled and sat back on their heels once they saw it.

Jewel started to sob as she continued to hug us, none of us willing to let go at all. “I love you,” she said quietly. “I really, really love you!”

I kissed her forehead. “We love you too.”

She seemed like she wanted to speak again, but couldn’t. She finally let go and looked at us, tear tracks staining her face. “I can’t thank you enough,” she sobbed. “For all of this. And to all of you who came here, just for me.” She buried her head in her hands. “Today has been so perfect. I never thought I would ever have a birthday like this, but here I am. Here we are.” She laughed a little as she cried. “Is this a dream?”

We all chuckled with her and hugged her, Ambrosia, Rosie, Alexis and Caleb joining in. As she collected herself again, she hugged me tightly, then Morgyn.

“Mom,” she smiled at me. “And Dad,” she gave Morgyn the same smile. “It’s unbelievable.”

“Well, believe it,” Morgyn smiled warmly in return. “It’s true.”

Jewel nodded and smiled brightly. “Thank you, again.”

We attended the festival of snow, and had fun. Jewel stayed close to Morgyn and I, almost like a young child rather than a teen. It made sense though. It was the first time in a very long time that she had parents she knew cared about her. And now, they actually had the labels of parents. We didn’t mind her staying close at all. It was nice.

Rosie and Alexis grabbed Jewel’s hand and whisked her away to get something to eat, and Caleb, Lilith, Ambrosia, Wolf and Kris headed up to the ski slopes.

Morgyn took my hand, stopping me as I walked. He pulled me toward him so I was facing him. He stroked my cheek with his gloved hand and gazed into my eyes.

I smiled at him, nodding slowly. This moment was perfect. This night was perfect.

He leaned in close and kissed me softly. He gazed at me happily.

“I love you.”

I smiled. “I love you too.”

By the time the festival ended, the girls practically had to be carried back to the lodge. As we walked inside, they all retreated to Jewel’s room to sleep.

I saw Marco come up and I took his hand, leading him to a back room.

“Okay, party’s over. Let’s do this.”

He laughed and pulled out a small notebook. He read through it aloud, explaining combinations he had tried and which ones could work with a little tweaking.

“This is the home stretch.” He smiled. “We’re getting closer.”

I nodded, clenching my fist. I was so ready for this to be over once and for all.

We tried combinations together, getting closer and closer to the final outcome.

Marco suddenly sat down. “Hold on,” he said quietly.

I sat beside him, rubbing his back. “What’s wrong?”

He shook his head. “Just need a break. This is taking a lot out of me. I feel weak.” He sighed and hung his head. “I don’t want to take away from this vacation,” he said. “I want to help Caleb, help you.” He glared at his hand. “But I can’t do that if it will just weaken me like this.”

I rested my hand on his shoulder. “Marco.”

He gazed into my eyes, his expression immediately softening. “Sorry,” he mumbled. “I just want to get this right.”

“You will,” I smiled reassuringly. “Do you think any anecdote just happened overnight?”

He sighed. “I suppose not. But-“

I put my finger on his lips. “Shh. Stop. No buts.”

He nodded and playfully bit my finger.

I pulled it away, blushing slightly. “I, uh, I’m going to go to the hot springs. I need to wind down a bit.”

“Mind if I tag along?” He asked quietly.

“No. You can. Maybe it would help calm you.” I shrugged slightly. “I mean, no offense.”

He laughed. “None taken.”

We made our way to the springs and changed into our bathing suits, sitting down in the water.

“Ahhh,” Marco smiled contently. I forgot how good this feels.”

“You’ve been here before?” I asked.

He nodded. “Yeah, back before the realms were split. I came here to ski a lot. After being on the slopes almost all day, it was nice to come here and relax.”

I smiled. “It is pretty nice.”

We stayed silent for awhile until Marco sighed.

“What is it?” I asked.

“I’m still just really bothered by this spell.” He looked at me. “It’s like I’ve almost got it. I can feel it. But I try, and it fails.”

I shook my head and took his hand under the water. “Don’t beat yourself up. We’ll get it.”

He grinned a little, squeezing my hand. “If you’re going to keep shushing me or taking my hand, maybe I don’t want to find the solution.”

I looked away, blushing again.

He moved a little closer. “I see those rosy cheeks.”

I shook my head. “You should really stop flirting with me.”

He nodded. “I’m sorry.”

I gazed at him. “You know what causes that?”

“The fact that you’re-” he stopped. “Uh, no.”

I laughed and let down my shield. “Hold up your hand.”

He did, and I touched his fingertips with mine. The shock was small, but the water lit up red around us.

“Whoa,” he laughed. “We’re like a walking lamp.”

I laughed too. “I know I’ve mentioned it before. But it’s what happens with Morgyn and I too.” I looked down. “Jewel holds the same power, but she hasn’t fully tapped into it yet. But she was going to be the sage after Morgyn.”

“Going to be?” Marco raised an eyebrow.

I nodded. “Yes. Not anymore.”

He looked at me, waiting for me to continue.

I sighed. “Due to your age and your power, you’re now next in line.”

“No,” he shook his head, waving his hand in the water. “I don’t want it. And I definitely wouldn’t be received with open arms.”

*We’ll see.”

He looked away. “So, that shock causes physical attraction?”

“In some form, yes. Be it euphoric or familial, yes. It’s why Jewel wanted us to be her parents, why Morgyn and I had an instant connection, why you wanted me to be queen, and why you-” I stopped. “It’s the reason you feel the way you do toward me.”

He nodded, taking it all in. “But, the queen thing, no. That wasn’t the reason.” He continued waving his hand through the water, letting it flow between his fingers. “I was angry at you. You picked up on my plan much too quickly. I needed to keep you close so you wouldn’t revolt. Which, you did.”

“And the alluring spell?” I asked.

“I…” he paused. “I um, I don’t want to talk about that. It was unnecessary and rude. Downright horrible.” He hung his head. “I kind of wish you didn’t remember that.”

When he forced me to be queen for a few weeks while trapped in the realm, Marco had used an alluring spell which I fell for. We ended up in bed together. I brought it up to see his reaction, and based on the fact that he didn’t even want to discuss it told me all I needed to know. “Well, it’s in the past.”

He gazed at me. “I know I say it a lot, but for that, I’m truly sorry. Even more than the rest.”

I smiled reassuringly. “I think the fact that I’m sitting here with you, alone, in our bathing suits tells you that I don’t hold it against you.”

He laughed. “Yeah, I guess so.” He sighed. “It was about power.”

I nodded. “I know. That’s all you craved then. Power over everyone. But I was too strong willed, and so you took control in other ways.”

He stared at the water. “I wish I could take it all back.”

“I know that too.” I thought for a moment and started to smile. “I have a secret about that whole ordeal.”

“Oh?”

I grinned. “I discovered a device. When switched on, it blocked out all magical interference. You couldn’t use magic to see it hear anything that was going on while it was active. I used it a lot, going against your rules and avoiding punishments for it.”

He nodded. “I had a feeling. It’s how the others knew to revolt.” He paused. “I’m glad you all did. I wouldn’t have stopped.” He gazed at me. “And I’m still impressed. You’re strong.”

“Damn right,” I grinned.

He laughed quietly, looking back at the water. “I’m sorry I’ve been so forward. It’s the last thing you need after everything.” He gestured toward my belly. “Especially with…you know.”

I grinned. “I’ll find you a queen, Marco.”

He laughed. “No, no. None of that queen stuff.”

I giggled and rested my head on his shoulder. “For the record, I feel it too. But I’m trying to process it differently. You’ve become one of my best friends, and I’m trying to change the way I think of you. From that whatever attraction this power gives us to maybe something more like brother and sister.”

He rubbed my back. “Then I’ll try to do that too.”

I giggled again. “Good luck.”

He gently tickled my side. “Yeah, I’ll need it.”

I shrieked and stood up, getting away from him. “Hey!”

He gave me an innocent smile. “Problem?”

I gave him a playful glare. “Yes. I’ll muder you tenfold if you tickled me again.”

He pulled me back down beside him. “Tenfold?”

I laughed. “Yes. I’ll kill you and revive you repeatedly just to kill you again.”

He laughed too. “Okay, you win. That sounds painful, and exhausting.”

“It’s worth a shot,” we heard. We turned around and looked quickly, seeing Vlad. He wasn’t a spirit. He was alive.

Marco stood up quickly, keeping me behind him. “What are you doing here?”

Kris stepped out from behind him, looking terrified.

Vlad smiled. “Let’s just say I called in a few favors.” He lifted his hand, picking Marco up with magic and dropping him on the ground beside the spring.

“Marco!” I scrambled out of it and ran over to him. He was unconscious. I looked up. “Kris. What did he do to you?”

Kris stared at me, his eyes wide as the terror spread across his face.

“Sure, Kris, why don’t you tell her?” Vlad grinned.

“He killed them. I had no choice. He said-” he shook his head. “He would have-“

“I told him if he didn’t find a way to revive me, I’d kill his previous girlfriend and her slimy brother.”

Marco started to stir, grunting as he looked around. I took his hand and helped him up.

Vlad tilted his head. “You two are quite cozy, eh?” He grinned. “Do Caleb and Morgyn know?”

Marco growled. “We’re just friends. You bastard, leave us all alone!”

Vlad got in his face. “No! Kris killed me. So I killed innocents before him. He found a way quickly to give me all I desired.” He grinned. “Some of us always get what we want. We don’t always get killed by those who are weaker than us. Marco Lew.”

“I’m glad she did!” Marco barked back. “I was a monster. I’m not doing that again.”

“And if your life depends on it?”

“I’ll sacrifice myself.”

“And if another’s life depends on it?”

“I’ll kill you.” Marco’s eyes narrowed. “Without any hesitation.

I saw blood starting to stream down the side of Marco’s face. I approached him. “Marco, come on, we need to clean you up.”

He shrugged my hands off of him. “What’s your plan?”

“Oh, now if I told you that, Marco, the fun would be over.” Vlad shrugged. “Go to the mountain. Follow the trail of blood. You’ll find your beloveds there. I’m taking my son with me.”

And with that, they left in a cloud of mist.

Marco furrowed his brow. “Bastard.” He quickly lost his balance. “Whoa.”

“Come on,” I said, leading him to the edge of the spring. “Sit. I’ll help you.” As we sat, I held up my hands to cast a healing spell, bug I stopped.

“Wait,” I said quietly, putting my hands down. “No, I’ll help you the traditional way. I don’t know if he left any black magic behind.”

“Uh huh,” marco nodded slightly, closing his eyes.

“Nonono, Marco, look at me.” I rested my hand on his cheek and pulled him toward me. “Keep your eyes open.”

“Jade, I’m tired,” he protested. “Let me rest.”

“No! Come on. Let’s go back to the lodge.” I stood up and held out my hand.

Marco fell forward into the spring, face down in the water.

“No!” I shouted, jumping back in. I pushed him up, letting him sit on rocks beneath the water. “Marco, come on! I can’t help you here!”

No response.

“Marco. Marco!” I tapped his cheeks. “God dammit.” I looked around for someone, anyone. “Help!!”

But nobody came.

I couldn’t use magic on him, but I couldn’t lift him up. God, what if he dies? The thought terrified me. I couldn’t revive him if he did. Not unless I had the spell. But I needed him for the spell.

“Someone, please help!”

Silence.

I looked at Marco and sat beside him, pulling him close to me and cried. There was nothing else I could do.

“I’m sorry, Marco. I don’t know what to do.” I whispered, stroking his hair as I wept. “Please wake up. Please.” I sobbed.

“Wake up.”

I awoke to sun rays in my face, beside Morgyn, who was sleeping peacefully. I jumped out of bed and ran down the hall to Marco’s room. As the door flew open, I called to him.

“Marco! Are you alright?”

He stirred. “Huh? Yeah, I’m good.” He stretched groggily.

I jumped on him, hugging him tightly. “Oh my god. You’re okay! I’m so glad you’re okay!”

He laughed as I pushed him down onto the bed, holding him tightly. He hugged me back. “Jeez, if I could wake up to that every morning, I’d be a happy man.” He paused. “Oh, no flirting. Sorry.”

I pulled away and sat back at the end of the bed, tears streaming down my face.

He sat up. “My god, what’s wrong? Are you okay?”

“I had a nightmare.”

He wiped my tears. “Hey, it’s okay. You don’t have to tell me, but I promise, I’m fine. You fell asleep in the spring last night. I brought you back here, then went to bed. All is well, I promise.”

“Is Kris here?”

“I think so, why?”

“I need to see him.”

Marco grinned. “So you can give him such a nice, warm wake up call too?”

I glared at him.

“Okay, okay. Go.”

I flashed him a playful smile as I walked out of the room. How much of our conversation was a dream last night? I mindlessly wandered downstairs, my sights set on Kris.

He stood in the kitchen, being flirtatious with Lilith as I walked in.

“Oh,” I stepped back just as they kissed.

Lilith broke it. “What’s up, Jade?”

I shook my head. “It’s nothing. I just wanted to see if Kris was here.”

“Do you need something?” He asked, tilting his head.

“No, no. Just uh, checking in with everyone.”

Kris smiled. “Well, thanks! I’m good.”

I smiled back. “I’ll leave you two be. Might want to take it your room.” I winked.

“Don’t have to tell me twice!” Kris exclaimed, picking lilith up and throwing her over his shoulder. She shrieked as they both laughed. They rushed past me, bumping straight into Marco.

“Whoa,” marco stepped back. He walked in, laughing. “What’s that about?”

I grinned. “Let’s just hope they don’t make too much noise.”

He cleared his throat. “Oh. I see.”

I giggled. “They’re cute.”

He grinned. “Yes, they are.” He leaned against the counter. “Sooo when are ya gonna tell me about that nightmare?”

I sighed. “First, I have a question. What happened last night?”

He looked up at the ceiling. “We went to the hot springs at the bath house and just chatted. You explained this power between us and we agreed to see each other more as family rather than well, whatever we are. Or um,” he paused. “Whatever I see you as.”

I nodded. “And after?”

“You rested your head on me and fell asleep. So I brought you here.”

I smiled. “That’s a relief.”

There was silence for awhile.

“The dream?” Marco asked again.

I looked away. I was reluctant to tell him. “Vlad. He saw us in the spring and approached us. He was alive. He hurt you. You hit your head on a rock pretty hard. When he left, he took Kris, said he had murdered people. You fell into the water. I-” I felt tears fill my eyes. “I think you died. But I couldn’t save you because I didn’t want to cast magic!” My tears fell and I looked away again. “I didn’t know what to do. I called out for help, but no one heard me. Nobody came.” My words were caught in a son and Marco pulled me into a hug.

“It was a nightmare,” he reminded me, “I’m here. I’m okay.”

I held him close. “It felt so real.” My voice was a whisper, my tears streaming down my face.

He sighed, resting his head on mine. We stayed silent for awhile.

Caleb came in and stopped suddenly. “Oh.”

Marco shook his head, signaling that it was nothing. Caleb walked over.

“Everything alright?”

I pulled away and looked at him. I didn’t say a word.

“May I?” Marco asked, quietly. I gave him a nod. “She had a nightmare about Vlad.”

Caleb’s eyes widened. “You what? Are you sure it was a dream?”

“Yes,” I nodded.

“I hope he’s not finding a way to taunt us beyond the grave, like before.” He crossed his arms. “God, we can never get a goddamn break. It’s always something!”

“Caleb,” Marco lifted his arm.

“No! This is ridiculous. One thing after another, after another.”

I hugged him tightly. “Caleb, stop.”

He hugged me back.

“I’ll leave you two,” Marco said with a slight smile.

“Calm down,” I whispered. “It’s okay.”

He gripped me tighter. “This truly is a nightmare.”

I nodded. “It is. But we’ll get through it. If there’s anything I’ve learned about all of us it’s that we are resilient.”

He laughed quietly. “Yes, we are.”

I pulled him into another hug, and as I did, I felt more movement in my belly. I smiled. “Peanut really likes you. They were quiet all this time, but as soon as we hug, they wake up.”

Caleb placed his hand on my belly and smiled. “It’s like they know.”

“I’m sure they do,” I smiled back, resting my head on him again.

After awhile, we left the kitchen. I saw everyone happily chatting in the living room, aside from the girls. I figured they were in Jewel’s room. But Wolf and Ambrosia were also missing.

We sat down. “Where’s Ambrosia?”

“She went out for a walk,” Caleb explained. “She seemed pretty upset and said she needed time to process something. I didn’t ask what, as she seemed really uncomfortable. She left right before I came into the kitchen.”

“Oh,” I said as I looked down. I didn’t know how to respond to that. “I hope she’s alright.”

“Me too,” Caleb agreed.

As if she knew we were talking about her, she came back in, Wolf close behind.

“Mom,” she said in a panicked tone, “can I talk to you?”

“Y-yeah.” I nodded. I had never seen her like that. Granted, I hadn’t actually known her very long, but I almost always saw her bubbly and happy. This was a complete contrast to her normal behavior. I stood up and walked downstairs to speak to her alone.

“What is it?” I asked quietly.

“I’m…” she stopped. “I-ugh.” She growled and looked at the floor. “I found out this morning that I’m…p-pregnant.”

My eyes widened in shock, but happiness, but — I didn’t really know how to feel. She didn’t seem happy about it at all. “That’s…great news? Is it?” I asked.

She nodded slowly, clutching her belly with both hands. “I mean, yeah, but no.”

I hugged her. “Why no?”

“I’m afraid,” she said. “I’m afraid this will ruin my career, and Wolf and I are too—“ she stopped. “I don’t know if we are ready to be parents.”

I nodded. “Well, there are other-“

“No,” she said sternly, but quietly. “Abortion and adoption are out of the question. I just don’t know what to do right now, or how to process this.”

“I’ll help you,” I smiled, rubbing her back. “Whatever you need, I’m here.”

She nodded and leaned into me. “Thanks. How do I tell Dad?”

I shrugged. “Tell him when you’re ready, and however you feel is best.”

“Will you be with me?”

“Every step of the way.”

She hugged me and I held her tightly. We stayed like that for awhile before heading back upstairs to be with everyone again. Even after we got back up there, though, she wasn’t her usual self. She sat in the living room with Wolf, resting her head on him as they watched TV.

I sighed and went outside, looking out over the trees and endless snow. I breathed in the crisp air and sighed again. I felt movement and rested my hand on my belly.

“Everything is so strange now,” I said quietly. I didn’t know who I was talking to. Myself? The baby? The air? It didn’t matter. “I never imagined myself having a child. But here I am with two and one on the way.” I closed my eyes and smiled. “And going to be a grandparent too? Everything I know about family dynamics is thrown out the window now.” I laughed softly. “And I wouldn’t change any of it for the world.”
